Blue Belt Seminar

1. What is a Blue Belt?

In addition to Green belt skills a Blue belt knows how to flow moves properly. A Blue belt can flow up and down the flow with smoth and effective combinations. A Blue belt can perform all of the Kata up to the Blue belt level without pause, this includes the testing kata, Seisan, Nahancin III, and Pinan V. A Blue belt knows what kinds of Karate are on Okinawa, what kinds of Te existed on Okinawa, who founded what styles of Martial Arts, and the names and meanings of the various Martial Arts styles.

2. What fighting skills should a Blue Belt possess?

A Blue belt knows how to attack by combinations. During kumite a Blue belt should be able to attack and block using multiple combinations. During kumite a Blue belt's techniques will flow continuousely and will have good focus. A Blue belt knows how to control the fighting tempo of his/her opponent. This means to sped it up, slow it down, lead them, get them to fight your fight as the situation sees fit. A Blue belt will exhibit some basic knowledge of fighting strategy i.e. close on a kicker and kick a boxer, strike your opponent more often than they strike you, and throw some basic block and counter techniques.

3. What about one-steps

A Blue belt will be able to perform all classical and functional one steps and to perform them in any order called out by another student or by the Sensei. A Blue belt will be able to perform the "One step" Kata and will be able to perform both the Classical and Functional one-steps with take downs.

4. What about weapons?

The demonstration of a weapon is not a requirement to reach Brown belt. A Blue belt may want to demonstrate a weapon at the Blue belt test but they will not be judged on their performance using the weapon. However, a Blue belt is working on gaining proficiency with the handling of at least one weapon. Usually at GAMA, students begin with handling a nunchuku, however other non-bladed weapons can be studied also at the Blue belt level. A Blue belt student should be able to perform at least one complete weapons kata without hesitation even though they will not be tested on that kata until the rank of Ni-Kyu(2nd Brown).

5. What about Judo

A Blue belt should know basic hand and wrist locks and be able to execute them with an appetizer, main course and desert. A Blue belt should know how to take down and opponent and how to control the opponenent once the opponent is on the ground. A Blue belt should know how to lead an opponent into a takedown and how to deal with two attackers at once.

6. What Kata must a Blue belt know to test for the rank of 3rd Degree Brown Belt

A Blue belt must be able to perform the following kata strong and without hesitation at their San Kyu (3rd Brown) belt test:

Kihon Kata 1-5

Nahanchi Kata's 1-3

Pinon Kata's 1-5

Seisan

In the performance of these kata's the stances must be correct and the block must be strong. The test kata's must be performed well, the other kata's must demonstrate an improved level of performance.

7. What other things count?

Above all a Blue belt is a person who can flow. A Blue belt testing for Bown belt should have improved flow over their performance on their Blue belt test. The techniqes used during the flow should be natural and look effective.

Since a Blue belts techniques are becoming hard enough to injure someone, a Blue belt testing for Brown belt will be expected to demonstrate control of their techniques. These skills can be gained by regular attendance at the Friday night Kumite class (5:00pm & 7:00pm). A Blue belt going to Brown belt should also be physical fit i.e. you should be able to fight four 15 minute round without becoming exhausted.
